Malika S.
Private tutor in Norfolk, VA
Education
I received my BA in English Literature with an Arthurian Literature concentration from the University of Massachusetts - Lowell in 2008. I graduated with a 3.8 GPA (Cum Laude) and as a member of Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society). Additionally, I received a history minor, concentrating in European history. I began coursework for MEd in 2009, which was postponed after the birth of my daughter. Additionally, I have been active in music since 1995, when I began learning the clarinet. Since then, I have taught numerous State Champion groups in both MA and VA, as well as performed in national championship ensembles.
Experience
Tutored throughout college, as well as informally during high school. I love to teach and to see the impact that one can have on a student/individual when they truly realize their full potential. I am a certified change manager (the "people" side of change) and therefore aware that, especially during stressful times, people compartmentalize and learn differently - there is no cookie cutter approach to get through to an individual.

Hobbies
I love to read. The best thing in the world is to get lost in a book on a chilly winter day. One of the more gratifying parts of being a parent is seeing that love for learning/literature blossom in my daughter. I believe a love for reading (and learning to articulate all of the questions which great literature can pose) helps one situate themselves in the world in a manner where they are able to relate to people from any background. I love sports, particularly baseball. One of the amazing things about literature is that there is always the opportunity for it to play to a child's interests. If talking about OBP or the CY Young race is what engages them, consider it done! Music was the catalyst for drawing this bookworm wallflower out of her shell, and therefore I fully intend to give back everything that it has given to me. Regardless of level or interest, music will always be a huge part of my (and my family's) life.
